More than 180,000 existing [yellow tail] Facebook fans, and many more food and wine lovers from around the world, are invited to dig out their favourite party food or wine cocktail recipe and share it with like-minded party people. The recipe will then be formatted by [yellow tail] into a downloadable card, complete with image and a wine match.
Fans will also be able to browse other people’s recipes, select their favourites and create a personalised party cook-book that can be downloaded as a pdf file to print and used to create their own party grub.
The Facebook application comes at the ideal time as people prepare for the upcoming Christmas season, and fans will be able to fill their personalised cookbook with planned holiday dishes or create one as a thoughtful gift for a loved one for no monetary cost.
John Casella founded [yellow tail] in 2001 and is excited to see how this new 10th anniversary application will bring people together as they plan their own parties. “When we created [yellow tail], we wanted to provide a fun and tasty wine that people could enjoy with their friends on any occasion, so our 10th anniversary celebration needed to help people to achieve that. Food often goes hand-inhand with wine at parties and gatherings, so I hope people have some fun with this campaign,” says John.
Even though 10 years seems a short time, much has changed since the first bottle of [yellow tail] shiraz and chardonnay was made.
“It’s hard to believe how much the world has changed in the last 10 years. If you asked me in 2001 how we would celebrate our 10th anniversary, I would never have guessed it would be online. Facebook and social media has become such a big part of our lives. It is wonderful to see the way it unifies people with shared interests from all around the world,” adds John.
Nor would John have guessed the brand [yellow tail] would become one of Australia’s most successful wine labels. John credits the success to the consistent quality and value of the product year-on-year.
“Consumers enjoy the taste of [yellow tail] wine, the fun nature of the brand and the affordability of the product. When you combine all three things, it makes for the perfect party wine. All you need now is the party food to go with it,so that’s why we’ve created this Facebook application,” said John.
The Facebook application is live to fans from all around the world from 14 November, 2011.

According to REIQ stats, last year Chinese buyers finalised deals for $22.76 million in houses and apartments, while buyers from the Russian Federation signed for $22.7m in homes.
Russia’s increasing middle and affluent classes are growing due to oil and mining wealth. Australian developers are heading to Moscow with promotional roadshows specifically targeting this market with the allure of sun, sea and great value. And it’s paying off.
In the 2006-07 financial year, Russians bought 64 Gold Coast properties, totalling $35m. Last year, Russians spent more on individual homes than Chinese buyers, with an average purchase price of $516,000, compared with $446,000 for Chinese citizens.
But Chinese buyers are emerging as a force, and it’s just the tip of the iceberg of the numbers that could be headed our way, for lifestyle change, education and investment.
According to Oresti Astras, who specialises in prestige property around Clear Island Waters, Robina, Mermaid Waters and Broadbeach Waters, “Chinese buyers are looking for value, but not bargains in the lower end of the market – they are seeking quality around $1.4m”.
As Astras explains, unlike the Japanese and New Zealand property investment spikes, the Chinese market has massive potential.
At recent estimate, China is home to 970,000 millionaires, 40,000 ten-millionaires and 1,400 billionaires. Affluence is an economy driver and the Chinese are on a spending spree. With a population of 1.3 billion people, it’s no wonder the whole world is hoping to do business with the Chinese. There are different types of buyers of local property, says Astras.
“There’s the investor and those buying for a lifestyle choice, and some are doing a bit of both. They may buy a unit or house close to universities, so that their kids can live here and then they visit and have as investment which they can also rent out.”
While the Gold Coast is gradually enjoying more attention, Melbourne and Sydney are getting the bulk “because they are better known”, says Astras. “The Chinese move there to live and then realise the Gold Coast is better value and offers a better lifestyle, so we are seeing interest increasing.”
The wide waterways, privacy and spacious, modern homes on generous blocks are appealing for this new wave of buyer. “Plus, around Clear Island Waters, there are no midgies, so it’s an attractive to them as it is to us!”
With property slumping to 2004 prices, the Chinese market, being as astute as other investors, are witnessing “incredible value, compared to Melbourne or Sydney”.
“They can buy a waterfront home for the price of an apartment in Sydney. The unis up here are gaining very good reputations overseas, so it makes more sense for investors to buy here.”
According to Astras, currently over 50 percent of buyers for the homes he represents above $1.4m have been Chinese. “But that varies. It can be as high as 60 percent.”
The Chinese influx can only be good for the Gold Coast, explains Astras. “In terms of the education sector, tourism and property, it is not the saviour, but it is helping. The real estate market has been underpinned by Chinese purchases, particularly in the premium end.”
Aiming to take full advantage of the stream that could turn in to a river, Astras is set to hang his shingle in the special economic zone of China, Shen Zhen, with a Chinese business partner. “We are serious about promoting the Gold Coast and the benefits of buying property here. It’s only a matter of time before the property market heats up again.”
The girls kicked off the evening with a jaunt around Surfers Paradise courtesy of Get Hummered, before parading this season’s swimwear from Mojoz, then casual and evening wear from Chevron Renaissance. Guests were spoilt for choice with dining options from the restaurants at Chevron Renaissance.
Judged by a select panel that included highly awarded jewellery designer, Ann Middleton, CEO of Surfers Paradise Alliance, Mike Winlaw, TV host John Burgess, model agent, Sallie Tamblyn and personal trainer, Shane Wood, the 10 entrants were put through their paces – swimwear, casual wear and evening wear, all from the retailers at Chevron Renaissance.
During the course of the event, each entrant was asked about her aspirations and what winning Face of Coast would mean to them. From feedback and the enthusiastic applause, the audience was impressed by the composure and maturity of the girls, whose ages ranged between 18 and 23.
Entrants included University students, a barista, a keen Surf Life Saver and musician – all gorgeous and uniquely talented. “I couldn’t pick between them,” said Coast Lifestyle Publisher, Cindy Page, who with her team had contributed to the event which will propel one young woman to the international catwalks and covers of magazines. “It’s so touching and monumental to be able to change the course of somebody’s life. We are so proud to be able to boost them in to the first step in their career.”
Judges too were faced with a difficult task. “Each one was compelling in her own way,” said John Burgess. “But we made the right decision in choosing Kiralie, who had poise, maturity, elegance and that great healthy look.”
Kiralie was in her own words “shocked and overwhelmed”.
“I think I had the least experience of all the girls – who were all so beautiful and determined. But when they announced my name, I was so excited and thrilled!
I really want this.”
Despite several practice sessions, Kiralie revealed she was nervous of stumbling or “messing up”.
“I don’t normally wear heels, I am tall enough. I pictured myself toppling into the fountain. But when the time came, I felt very calm. I am doing communications at uni, so I have had to improve my presentation and speaking skills. I used to speak garbled and quickly, but through a year of practice press conference I have slowed down. My family will tell you, I love to talk!”
Her parents, Lindy and Brad, brother Nick and two sisters, Taryn and Jenna, as well as boyfriend Jake, were all on hand at the event to lend support and volume!
“They were over the moon, very proud. Mum was clapping like a seal!” Kiralie’s height and slender frame have always attracted attention. “I’m 180cm. People have always said I should try modelling. Straight out of high school, I did a June Dally Watkins course, but I was never in the position to have an agent, and that meant I wasn’t truly motivated.” For Kiralie, winning Face of Coast “is an amazing stepping stone”.,
“It’s all on a plate for me now. I hoped that when the time was right, it would all come together, but this is amazing!”
As the winner, her prizes include a year modelling contract with Tamblyn Models, a trip to China for fashion week and to meet bookers there at the end of October, exquisite jewellery from Middleton’s – jade, diamond and freshwater pearl earrings laced with 0.16cts of Diamonds and Autore Freshwater 9 -9.5mm Drop Pearls created in 18ct White Gold (valued at $1,500) and matching necklace in the form of a stunning jade pendant laced with 0.08cts of Diamonds and an Autore Freshwater 9-9.5mm Drop Pearl created in 18ct white gold (valued at $1,100) – skincare from Dr Spiller, personal training sessions from Get Motivated, a gift pack from the retailers of Chevron Renaissance and swimwear by Mojoz, as well as featuring this issue of Coast Lifestyle magazine.
Proving she is more than a pretty face, Kiralie is in her second year of a PR and Journalism degree at Griffith University. She is prepared to put her studies on hold for her modelling interlude, and says the best part of the competition was meeting the nine other contestants.
“The girls are so friendly. We had a great time, both at the photo shoots prior to the judging and on the night.”
There was barely time to organise appointments, as Kiralie and Sallie Tamblyn headed to China courtesy of Travel Masters, Nerang, the week after the competition, for what is no doubt one of the world’s major fashion events, as well as to meet prospective brands and bookers. The tall, naturally beautiful and very gracious Kiralie said the opportunity to appear on the cover of Coast Lifestyle and model professionally is one of the best things to ever happen to her.
“Winning Face of Coast will give me the opportunity to express my own goals and motivation and show people we can be happy in our own skins, with ambitions rather than just looks, and that a good state of mind is the most important thing.”
The Face of Coast 2010 winner, Tess Alexander, found great success in Japan and then went on to model in Europe, her striking look and warm personality proving very popular in Milan, Italy.
China will be Kiralie’s first real overseas trip. “As a baby, we went to Europe, but that doesn’t count. I have seen the photos and I look very cute in my snowgear, but I can’t remember it at all. I would never in my wildest dreams have thought I would be traveling to China!” Together with Sallie Tamblyn, Kiralie was swept off to China, via Hong Kong and Singapore, taking time to sight see in each city, then to Beijing, before catching the phenomenal Bullet Train to Shanghai. “I am so excited! I will be grasping everything that comes my way. I realise how lucky I am!”
What an amazing night! Check out the great photos! The grand finalé of the Face of Coast competition 2011 was celebrated at the absolutely beautiful setting in the restaurant fountain courtyard of Chevron Renaissance, Surfers Paradise.
All the restaurants treated guests to champers, wine and scrumptious tasters, tapas and antipasto platters.
My congratulations to the 10 entrants who were an absolute delight. They were treated to a wonderful afternoon of trying on glamour swimsuits from Mojoz, fashion from stores lincluding Princess Polly, Sobi, Sweet & Viscous and I was dressed in style by Yours International for my role as compere.
The girls had their hair glammed up by Fox and beautiful makeup by Carla Sakrzewski. What an entrance in the stretch hummer, thanks to Get Hummered. Following the drive around Surfers, the contestants paraded on the fountain stage at Chevron Renaissance.
The judges that had the difficult task of selecting the Face of Coast magazine for 2011. Last year’s winner Tess Alexander set a high bar. On the night, she was actually texting her mother and sister (who were there on her behalf ) from Milan where she is modelling. She has been a fabulous success story from our first year 2010. We are all so proud of her. She is such a gorgeous girl! This year, the crown went to our very excited winner, our cover girl, Kiralie Cook, who by the time you read this will have been to China with Sallie Tamblyn, our international booker and me to be introduced to agents in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.
What an amazing trip and first modelling assignment for Kiralie. We will keep you posted on her journey, and more news about the trip next edition. Great photos of the night with all the beautiful girls were taken thanks to Connie, our new photographer. All the ladies deserved their place there, but they were so gracious when Kiralie was announced.
Connie of course has shot some fantastic looks with Kiralie for our front cover and inside shoot. How good does she look? And she has never modelled before.
We look forward to next year, so girls, think about entering as soon as you can, as next year will be even bigger and more exciting!
Thank you to our wonderful sponsors: Ann Middleton for her beautiful jewellery, Travel Masters Nerang for the amazing trip to China, Dr Spiller skincare for all the girls, Shane from Get Motivated for supplying personal training sessions, Joanne from Mojoz swimwear, and to Chevron Renaissance for once again being the host sponsor, also their stunning winners gift basket and flowers. Special thanks to John Burgess, Mike Winlaw, Ann Middleton and Shane Wood in joining with Sallie Tamblyn on the judging panel – what a daunting job.
'Til next year. Remember enter early and always step out in style!
A home is the single biggest investment most people will make in a lifetime, so it is important to maintain it. And in these days of a slow, or stagnant property market, people are having to make do for a lot longer – love the nest they’re in, rather than moving as often as in previous years and risk losing any gains.
The current climate has seen the rise of the renovation, the mini-makeover and getting back into DIY – great news for hardware and interiors stores, dismal news for investors and in many cases real estate agents.
Debt averse following the GFC, Aussies are paying down debt and staying put. Work/life balance too, has become more vital, as we struggle to keep our families free of debt, stress and above water in all ways.
So, if we have years to live in the one house, make the most of it.
In his new book, Home Maintenance, Luke Van Dyck teaches home owners, renovators and aspiring handymen the basics of building: the different types of structures (brick veneer, double brick, timber frame), the tools you’ll need for simple jobs around the home, and how to maintain the different rooms in your house, from the kitchen to the bathroom, floors and ceilings, doors and windows, walls, the roof, and outside.
Just in the nick of time for the coming summer holidays, this book contains hints and tips on painting, energy efficiency, cost saving and water conservation. There are 11 projects (set out in step-by-step format, with photographs) to do yourself including how to build a deck and even how to hang a picture.
Says the author: “My aim is to educate you on how to do this and save you time, inconvenience and money in the long term. After reading this book, you will be able to keep your home ship-shape. By doing the job correctly, you could add value to your asset, either through capital growth (provided the house is well maintained and in working order), by renovating the whole home, or updating a few rooms to keep up with the current trends.
“My goal is to arm the homeowner with enough information to make the correct decisions when it comes to maintenance, doing small projects and repairs, as well as achievable renovations around the home. This information should help ensure the longevity of your home and protect your asset. By the end of this book you should be able to make an educated decision on whether the job is achievable or if you need to get in a professional.”
Decorative details
Another new book on the market, New Vintage, reveals the secrets of interior designer, Tahn Scoon, who is known for decorating with gorgeous, and not costly details. It is full of practical information on how to create stunning aesthetic effects in
your own home.
In New Vintage, Tahn covers painting, the joys of searching for vintage and pre-loved items, outdoor rooms, kitchens, gardens and bathrooms. Take a look at some of her handy hints to save your cash and create a beautiful haven in every room of your home.
Tahn’s tips for creating a stunning Bathroom:
As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, it seems only natural that we want to spend less time bogged down in the daily grind. Australians seem to be working harder, but we are also maximising our downtime in the great outdoors – enjoying these alfresco areas gives us the ability to encompass what it truly means to live in the sub tropics. Whether sharing a glass of wine or throwing a sausage on the BBQ, maybe it’s time to give your outdoor space the makeover that it deserves.
Your outdoor rooms and entertaining areas should be an extension of your internal living space. Providing comfort, practicality and your aesthetic appeal is essential to making your outdoor spaces work. This is why the layout, planning and functionality of the area should be taken into consideration. Really working through all possible options is essential to the long-term use of the outdoor space. Incorporating clever design ideas with a unique aesthetic appeal and your own personal touch will provide you hours of interactive enjoyment for years to come.
Outdoor Furniture and Decor
Once you have decided on your layout, it needs to be furnished appropriately. There is a huge range of outdoor furniture available on the market constructed in a huge variety of materials including synthetic rattan, stainless steel and timber products, which can be mixed and matched. All can be very practical and cost effective but don’t forget that you can give your old furniture a new lease of life by simply giving it a lick of paint, a polish and a bit of elbow grease. Recycling can also be a great option – going to garage sales and the auction houses is not only more environmentally conscious, but it could save you quite a few dollars and you never know what kind of hidden gems you are going to find. Just remember, comfort is key.
Architectural Screens
Living in densely populated areas often means a lack of privacy and this is where screens are often fantastic. They are an architectural feature while also helping to achieve the desired amount of privacy, minimise noise and drafts. There is a great range of products to buy on the market made from a variety of materials like steel, perspex and timber, or it could be a simple DIY project with some cement fiber sheeting and an angle grinder. Another great option to open a more confined space would be placing a mirror behind the architectural screen to give an additional sense of depth.
Paint
Colour is probably the best way to give a space a new lease of life. Adding some colour and texture and creating a focal point to draw peoples’ attention to within the space, is an inexpensive solution. There are a huge number of fantastic paint products available on the market from lime washes and textured paints to special effects paints including copper, rust and zinc finishes, which age and oxidise surfaces resulting in a dramatic and a unique colour pallet.
Lighting
Ambient lighting is the best choice for outdoor spaces. Invest in good lighting – there is an extensive range of low voltage and energy efficient lighting available from most hardware and lighting. Candles are also a great alternative to lights, giving an element of romance and instant atmosphere that can’t be beaten. There are LED rechargeable candles available.
Plants
Factor in an abundance of foliage and plant life, which creates colour, fragrance and architectural features. Plants also create sound barriers and can also become practical for vegetables and herbs. Planter boxers with bamboo or hedging plants can
also be a great idea for screening, with casters on the bottom makes for moving them effortless.
Upholstery
The variety of outdoor fabrics now available on the market is outstanding. They generally are solution-died fabrics, which are UV stabilised and are often mold and mildew resistant. Just about any colour, texture and pattern are available from a variety of sources. Colour is great however it does have the tendency to date rather quickly so going for a more neutral colour pallet is advisable and instead add colour with feature walls, cushions and décor items.

As Katie Shiell from Hemisphere Living explains: “Trees4Trees is a non-profit foundation which is partnering with local communities to renew the environment through reforestation and education. This involves the distribution of tree seedlings of high value species to local farmers in Indonesia free of charge in the communities where Trees4Trees furniture manufacturing companies source their timber.
“It provides practical education and advice on how the farmers can grow their trees to maximise value through management of the plantings for environmental and economic benefit.” The Trees 4 Trees program is funded by a portion of the revenue from every piece of furniture made and sold within the Trees for Trees program.
“All furniture sold through the program carries a hang tag containing a unique world identification number (WIN),” says Katie. “We encourage our customers to check their WIN number online at trees4trees.org in order to learn the location of trees funded and planted by our donation.”
Trees4Trees planted over 200,000 trees in 2008/09 planting season, with plans to substantially increase the plantings in the future. The activities of the foundation are supported through contributions made by manufacturing and retail participants to fund the replacement of the trees used in the manufacture of their products.
Hemisphere Living also stocks many lines of recycled timber from old houses, bridges and railways, many of which can be hundreds of years old. “This element is what gives our furniture its unique character warmth and charm.”
Above all, each piece gives its owner the assurance that they are contributing to a worthy worldwide recycling program.

While many men and some women lose their hair, people are rarely content to go bald, and the majority will say it happens too early in their lives. Many don’t realise there are solutions, and it’s never too late to do something about it. These days, with improved technology and techniques, hair transplantation is a proven, permanent method of hair restoration. The recent medical advances and leading edge techniques we use today have made hair transplants virtually undetectable, so you can forget the image of the very obvious plugs. Transplanted hair looks natural wet or dry, can be styled the way you like it and is yours to enjoy for a lifetime.
Over the past 40 years, hair transplantation has been continually refined. In experienced hands, approximately 90 percent of the transplanted hairs will grow in their new position permanently. Hair transplantation generally provides good to excellent coverage.
Hair transplantation has a justified reputation as being very safe, and Clinic Del Mondo is considered to be a pioneer of this practice in Australia, whose highly trained personnel travel the world training and testing the latest innovations. As Geoff Smith explains, “the doctors and nursing staff have many years experience in hair transplantation – that’s our specialty. Dr Leat has over a decade in hair restoration and his methods are cutting edge. He is a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgeons and a member of the Australasian Hair Restoration Surgeons.
“Our patients come from various walks of life and all ages, from their early 20s to late 70s and into their 80s. This is about self-esteem and confidence to be yourself.”
Hair transplantation is considered a light procedure, as far as surgical procedures are concerned, so clients are encouraged to relax and enjoy the experience.
“The procedure is a light day procedure, and no bandages are required. You can go back to work the next day, depending on the number of grafts involved,” says Geoff. “Most patients say that if they had known how easy it is, they would have come in years ago. There are no ongoing visits and the hair grows for a lifetime. Our patients are unanimously thrilled by the level of natural hair growth the process achieves – which is undetectable from original hair. We have many, many referrals from friends of satisfied patients.”

For the very first time in Australia we have a single medical procedure that provides real rejuvenation results. Masterderm is an epidermal stem cell, skin treatment mask that literally replaces damaged skin cells with brand new cells! The results are staggering, providing the patient with an authentic renewed skin texture that rewinds the biological clock between 10 to 20 years, in some cases even more.
The vast majority of patients that experience the treatment believe that Masterderm is not only a real alternative to surgery, but that the actual final result is superior to surgery. The treatment promises to treat or erase deep expression lines, pigmentation, heavy eyelids, dark spots, freckles, sun spots, sun damage, acne scars and promotes lifting of the skin as the final divine touch.
Masterderm comes in three different applications; light (bronze), medium (silver) and full strength (gold) the prices start from only $660.
Dr Soraya Felix completed her certification with the team who originally developed this treatment. Dr Felix is the only licensed doctor in Australia to perform this intricate procedure.

What are the main reasons people seek or are recommended cosmetic dental procedures?
Most people want white, straight teeth, which give the impression of beauty, health and youth. A beautiful smile gives the person a sense of wellbeing, being perceived to be more attractive by the opposite sex. Beautiful healthy teeth are becoming more a requirement in achieving a good first impression, whether it is a social function or a job interview.
There have been numerous studies that show a beautiful smile can enhance your job prospects and make you more attractive to the opposite sex!
What are some of the most popular – veneers, implants, whitening etc?
Veneers are facings made of dental materials, designed to mask discoloured, unsightly teeth. They can also be placed in a special way to ‘straighten’ teeth, masking any mildly crooked teeth underneath. They are likened to false finger nails. Implants are made of titanium, inserted in the bone to replace any missing teeth. They are great alternatives to the unpopular partial dentures.
Crowns are similar to veneers, but they cover the whole tooth. They are designed to not only strengthen the tooth structure, but also to make them more aesthetically pleasing. Single crowns now can be made within hours, in the same day.
Tooth whitening is very popular. There are two main types. The first type is the take home whitening trays. The patients are fitted with customised trays and they take them home and apply whitening gel into the trays. The procedure takes 10 to 14 days. The second type is the laser procedure, described below. Patients need to be aware that generally, the teeth need to be professionally cleaned first, to give the best result. And whitening will not work on teeth with existing crowns.
Are these expensive procedures?
Like anything else in life, good quality materials/products can be expensive. However, there are different materials available to suit patients’ different needs, with varying costs to suit all budget.
Do you offer laser dental? What is it?
Laser is used for tooth whitening. Here, the patient lies in the dental chair for up to 90 minutes. Whitening gel is then applied to the teeth, activated by the laser.
Laser is also a piece of dental equipment that is used to cut through hard and soft tissues such as teeth, bone and the gums. It is widely used in almost all aspects of dentistry, such as ‘gum lifting’ procedures in cosmetic dentistry, tooth preparations and dental surgeries. We offer both laser procedures at RTD.
Does private medical insurance cover any part of these?
Yes, private medical insurance cover most of these procedures. Each patient needs to check with his or her own provider before commencing treatment.
How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign consists of a series of nearly invisible, removable aligners that you change every two weeks for the next set of aligners. Each aligner is individually manufactured for your teeth, and your teeth only. As you replace each aligner, your teeth will move – little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the final position prescribed by your dental provider.
Who is it most suited to?
It is suitable for people who are not keen to wear braces. However, Invisalign may not be suitable for every patient so consult a dental professional for assessment. Why should people look after their teeth throughout their lives for their health and wellbeing?
Fortunately, health and aesthetics go hand in hand. Good dental health usually means the teeth and the gums are healthy, which translates into a beautiful smile. While the eyes are the windows to the soul, teeth are doors to the body. We can tell so much from our teeth.
For example, when you see teeth with numerous fillings, you know that the person has had poor diet and oral hygiene. Poor diet means they have had too much sugar containing food at some stage of their lifetime. The body has its own checks and balances and if the system is overloaded, something has to give, the body has to compensate. Tooth decay is one of the first signs that we are eating too much sugar. If there are missing teeth, present, mainly due periodontal disease, this tells us that there is a breakdown in the immune system. It is not unusual to find patients with periodontal disease that have other systemic chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Worn down teeth are tell-tale signs that the patients may be stressed, or there could be chronic pain. On the other hand, when I see my patients with beautiful, straight white teeth, generally, they tend to be happy and healthy people with minimal general health problems.
